Patriotism is love and devotion to one's country. The word comes from the Greek patris, meaning fatherland. However, patriotism has had different meanings over time, and its meaning is highly dependent upon context, geography, and philosophy.

Although patriotism is used in certain vernaculars as a synonym for nationalism, nationalism is not necessarily considered an inherent part of patriotism. Among the ancient Greeks, patriotism consisted of notions concerning language, religious traditions, ethics, law, and devotion to the common good, rather than pure identification with a nation-state. Scholar J. Peter Euben writes that for the Greek philosopher Socrates, "patriotism does not require one to agree with everything that his country does and would actually promote analytical questioning in a quest to make the country the best it possibly can be."

In the Hindu epic Ramayana, Lord Rama tells Lakshmana Janani Janma Bhoomischa Swargadapi Gariyasi (Mother and Motherland are greater than heaven), which greatly lays the foundation for consciousness of patriotism for Hindus.

During the 18th century Age of Enlightenment, the notion of patriotism continued to be separate from the notion of nationalism. Instead, patriotism was defined as devotion to humanity and beneficence. For example, providing charity, criticizing slavery, and denouncing excessive penal laws were all considered patriotic. In both ancient and modern visions of patriotism, individual responsibility to fellow citizens is an inherent component of patriotism.

Many contemporary notions of patriotism are influenced by 19th century ideas about nationalism. During the 19th century, "being patriotic" became increasingly conflated with nationalism and even jingoism. However, some notions of contemporary patriotism reject nationalism in favour of a more classic version of the idea of patriotism which includes social responsibility.

How is it necons have abducted the word patriotism?
Q. When the reality is they are all fanatic nationalists. Better at abducting random foreign nationals. I dont see how they can appropriate the word patriotism. Clearly the least patriotic is a team that supports voter caging, flat out stealing elections, selling out the Constitution for imaginary protection among other things. I dont see intolerance in this question. I simply want to know how neocons have transformed the notion of blind nationalism into patriotism.
Asked by Baby Raptor - Wed Aug 1 15:20:17 2007 - - 16 Answers - 0 Comments

A. They've abducted it using the exact same strategy the socialists used to abduct "progressive". What you do is take a word with generally positive connotations, attach yourself to it like a leach, repatedly define the word itself to mean agreement with you, and wage a campaign to brand ANYONE who disagrees with you as un-xxx. It's even more effective if the dissenters are branded with multiple labels that all mean the same thing. It's a lot of work to redefine a word, but if you can pull it off it will pay dividends. The key is just repetition. People don't want to think that they're fanatic nationalists, patriot sounds so much better. So they're willing to help fool themselves. Say it enough times and you'll believe it.

What is patriotism is it wrong to be a patriot and how is it different from racism?
Q. In every country people imagine that they are the best and the cleverest and others are not as good as they are. The Englishman thinks that his country is the best, the Frenchman is very proud of France and every thing that is France. The Germans and Italians thanks no less of their country, in other countries the same thing is true. So is it wrong, and isn t it similar to racism?

One is generous and humane, the other narrowly egotistical; one is self-critical, the other self-righteous; one is sensible, the other romantic; one is good-humored, the other solemn; one is inquiring, the other pontificating; one is moderate, the other filled with passionate intensity; one is judicious and the other arrogant in the use of great power.
  • It should be the work of a genuine and noble patriotism to raise the life of the nation to the level of its privileges; to harmonize its general practice with its abstract principles; to reduce to actual facts the ideals of its institutions; to elevate instruction into knowledge; to deepen knowledge into wisdom; to render knowledge and wisdom complete in righteousness; and to make the love of country perfect in the love of man.
